Dr Dana Barakat was drawn to the College of Optometry because she deeply connected with its mission. During a mission trip to the southern border of Turkey, she had volunteered at a Syrian refugee camp. Working alongside optometrists and ophthalmologists, she saw firsthand how clear vision could transform lives.
At WesternU, Dr Barakat found a programme that balanced academic rigour with hands-on experience. The National Board of Examiners in Optometry exams tested her knowledge and perseverance, but WesternU’s structured support system made the process manageable.
Mentorship from faculty and upperclassmen provided more valuable guidance and encouragement, helping her succeed. “Whenever I had questions, faculty members were quick to make time for me, even during free clinic hours, to review concepts and walk me through areas I found challenging,” she says.
Today, Dr Barakat works in a group practice, where she continues to learn and contribute to a collaborative, patient-focused environment.
