“I would definitely recommend the MPS programme to anyone looking for a flexible, self-designed path that can serve as a springboard for careers in marine, atmospheric, or earth sciences.”
After making the bold decision to transition from the biomedical field into marine biology, Kirtana Kumar aimed for a programme that would help her start over from scratch. The Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science was where she ended up, inspired to pursue a career in ocean policy after taking a class at her undergraduate school. Her programme of choice? The MPS with the Marine Conservation track.
“One of my goals was to join a programme where I could gain diverse skills. I took many unique courses, from literature and policy to intensive science courses like tropical ecology and molecular biology,” she says. “I took a class on Broad Key Research Station and gained a better understanding of the marine life in South Florida and how to identify different organisms. I don’t think I’ve ever felt that much joy as I did being in the water 24/7.”
Such experiences are common here at the Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Science. All avenues prepared Kumar well – she completed an internship with the University of Miami’s Climate Resilience Institute, and plans to continue working with them after graduation.
“The programme is incredibly organised – I've never seen anything quite like it, which is impressive. What I value most, though, are the professors,” says Kumar. “They truly understand what you're aiming for, offering support and guidance without pressure. They have a way of recognising your strengths and gently steering you in the right direction. That level of personal attention is rare, and it's something I deeply appreciate.”
