Sexualities, Genders and Social Change
Sexualities, Genders and Social Change is all about developing empathy and critical thinking skills to challenge stereotypes and advocate for equality. Courses explore how sexual orientations, gender identities, and social norms shape our world.
The final part of the programme is a capstone project, where you get to create a community-based intervention or advocacy campaign alongside a local organisation to address a specific social issue to promote inclusive practices. After that, it’s up to you — some graduates go on to further study, while others jump into social work, outreach, policy, journalism, public health, or legal advocacy careers.
You can pick from two specialisations:
“For my EL project in my SXGN 2000 course, my peers and I decided we wanted to run a donation drive for the Guelph-Wellington Women in Crisis Centre to collect their most needed items in recognition of International Women’s Day. Throughout this project, I made many connections through networking not just with peers in my group but with outside organisations. We ran the donation drive out of the Bullring, a restaurant on the U of G campus, for three weeks. Throughout the drive, we had many opportunities to interact with interested students and Bullring staff members to build connections.”
