Jerry Adodo

Jerry Adodo, originally from Nigeria, decided to advance his knowledge in counselling after working for a mental health organisation for seven years. Before that, he was involved in missionary work and worked in New Zealand for six years, where he studied pastoral care and mental health.

One university stood out to him in his search for a degree that’ll help him realise his aspirations. "The University of Divinity's Christian background was what drew my attention," says the Bachelor of Counselling student. "It's got two components: I get to study as a student and a Christian. Given my previous background in pastoral bible college, it really complemented my past experience."

His favourite unit, for its experiential nature, revolves around psychology; but what he finds most valuable is the relationships he has built with his teachers — such as Dr Tom Edwards, the Counselling Program Director.

"I don't really know if there are words I could use to qualify him — he is the best," Jerry enthuses. "All my life studying, I've never seen someone so passionate about helping people to achieve their goals. He has an innate ability to break down complex concepts into simple terms."

Jerry believes this program has prepared him to tackle 21st-century challenges, such as the impact of artificial intelligence on mental health, in his future career. He will study some basic business skills later in the program.

Beyond this, the program trains students in clinical, ethical and cultural judgement. Course materials are in line with contemporary discourse and engage diversity.
