This programme equips students with a strong foundation in economics, statistics, and applied mathematics to prepare them for advanced careers in industry or doctoral research. In the first year, they complete core courses in theoretical economics, econometrics, mathematical statistics, and statistical software, with optional math specialisation courses. The second year is a time to investigate advanced data science, statistics, and econometrics.

However, what truly sets this porgramme apart is its commitment to “learning by doing.” As Professor Marion Hoffman, who teaches the Graph Analysis course, explains: “My main goal is to equip my students with tools they understand and will be able to use in the future. I focus on practice, using diverse materials like videos, drawings, and real-life examples to make the methods accessible.”

In the Graph Analysis course, for example, students are tasked with designing studies that analyse social or economic networks — such as treaty networks between countries, banking exchange networks, or collaboration networks in organisations. These projects encourage creativity and engagement, with relevance and real-world impact playing a key role in assessment.

“I always encourage students to think of areas of application they care about,” Professor Hoffman notes. Thankfully, they are constantly surrounded with inspiration –- TSE’s faculty includes experts from fields like sociology, psychology, political science, and more.

“The mere fact that researchers outside economics like me can teach at TSE is a testimony to the interdisciplinarity of the school,” says Professor Hoffman.

"My time at TSE pushed me to apply for a consultant job because I loved the diversity of use cases we studied there. It showed me the variety of jobs we can pursue as TSE alumni."
