Where tomorrow’s policy and political leaders are made

Public policy and public service have been in the London School of Economics and Political Science DNA since its founding in 1895. Today, the School of Public Policy (SPP) at the LSE is the contemporary embodiment of the founding mission of LSE, i.e. to understand the causes of things and for the betterment of society.

From its strategic base in central London, the SPP is doing just that. It has an international community, with as many as 69 nationalities represented and seemingly countless more ideas to share. Pair their diverse dispositions and distinctive demographics with events reimagining capitalism and a “Westless” world, and you have an ecosystem of bold thinking that inspires any enquiring mind.

Complementing this multicultural, community is the SPP’s multifaceted approach to teaching. Guided by a world-class faculty and professors with experience in government roles, programmes blend rigorous academics with on-the-ground, hands-on work. It’s engaging and empowering -- turning students into graduates ready to make a difference in public, private, and international sectors.

IBM and Columbia University are partnering to make data centres more energy-efficient, as these facilities consume around 2% of U.S. energy supplies according to the Department of Energy. They are modelling AI's energy use, designing low-power chips, reducing software inefficiencies, and optimising system operations to address this issue.

V. Faye McNeill, professor of chemical engineering, is working with partners across the Global South to expand air quality monitoring in India, generate new air pollution data in Africa, and build local capacity in air quality science. The team’s success has led to informed policy decisions and improved air management across various regions.

One of the biggest takeaways from my studies has been the ability to analyse policies using both qualitative and quantitative methods critically. I’ve learned how complex and multifaceted policymaking is and the importance of evidence-based decisions. These skills will be crucial as I move forward in my career, aiming to influence policy on both national and international levels.

I strongly believe that data is a social good shaping the future of policy design and decision-making and that we are entering a new era of using classic and modern forms of data when we address global issues. Studying data science will equip me with the technical skills to at least understand complex data and the insights they generate.

MPP classrooms are truly global. The amount of experiences and contribution the cohort makes to any discussion is the biggest learning one can get. I am pretty confident that no book can offer you this enriching learning. On any topic here, you have perspectives from different countries and lived experiences.

I’m working with financial institutions and policymakers to help them make better investments and shape evidence-based policy decisions for our economies to transition towards sustainability. I wouldn’t have built the sort of critical thinking and tools required to make changes happen in the field of climate and environmental issues without the MPA and the people I met there.

This fast-paced programme equipped me with analytical frameworks, toolkits, and most importantly, confidence that can be useful in designing meaningful initiatives in the public sector. I also gained a clear view on what evidenced-based policy is and learnt practical applications of advanced tools.

A campus designed for impact

My long-term goal is to become a subject matter expert in supply chain, which is the backbone of the industry. I found BGSU's Logistics Systems Engineering program is a combination of engineering and management, which helps me to enhance my knowledge and skills. I joined BGSU in January 2022 and got the opportunity to work as a Graduate Assistant on an industrial project under the guidance of Dr. Sarder.

Policy skills for real-world impact

At SPP, students don’t only benefit from LSE’s reputation for academic rigour, but also from SPP’s emphasis on how these academic skills can be applied to real-world scenarios. From day one, SPP students have access to a wealth of expertise, working alongside faculty and policy practitioners with extensive global experience. These interactive opportunities are not only limited to lectures and seminars, as SPP offers a wealth of additional development opportunities including the Policy in Practice seminar series with external expert guest speakers, GPPN annual competition, and the Professional Skills Accelerator programme.

An empowering education awaits at the LSE School of Public Policy.
