Master's Degree Programme in Food Development

How do you bring together a bachelor’s degree in microbiology and the passion of a pâtissier? For Dzmitry Paturemski, the answer was to enrol in UTU’s Master's Degree Programme in Food Development. Aside from core courses in food chemistry, sensory evaluation, and applications of specific equipment in food sciences, the programme also features elements that prepare you for the future.

“Another part is project-oriented, more practical courses that, in my opinion, prepare you for work in the industry. These courses include developing a food product, designing a sensory evaluation problem and a corresponding test, and learning about the EU and Finnish food legislation.” he says.

UTU students can customise their curriculum to best suit their interests. For instance, Dzmitry has taken a minor module in sustainable studies, and chosen courses on the general principles of sustainable development, sustainable company management, and tourism and environment. Widening his scope makes him more attractive to prospective hiring managers and companies.

The educators at UTU have been integral in Dzmitry’s growth. “One such person is Kaisa Linderborg, who was teaching the courses Food and Health and Food and Legislation,” he says. “She is also a supervisor from the university side in my project work. She was particularly inspiring in the course on food legislation because she managed to teach such a seemingly boring subject in an encouraging way.”

Dzmitry also mentions his Finnish teacher, Niina Kekki, who makes learning the language more engaging. “In general, I would say that I am very greedy for knowledge when it comes to learning languages, and Niina helps me a lot in my journey,” he adds.
