To supercharge your career in ICT, or information and communications technology, start with a University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) degree.

At UniSC, students can complete industry certifications and placements that are designed to get students job-ready. Here, world-class educators deliver ICT programs with industry-specific certifications and badges from Microsoft, ITS, CISCO and EC-Council — at no extra cost. These equip students with the ability to work Android, Cloud, Javascript, Java, Python, and C/C++ technologies. Not only do they hone specialist skills in data management, and in developing and using information systems to solve business problems, they earn hands-on experience in a professional work-integrated learning course as well.

In this, UniSC students can earn while they learn. Using in-demand industry certifications and badges, they secure and thrive in jobs and internships in the booming technology sector. By the time they graduate, they’re armed with high-level, job-ready professional skills.

An easy choice to make for career-focused graduates

Saurav Kumar Yadav — also known as Batish — packed his bags and left his home country of Nepal to study computer science at UniSC. “I see the computer as a means to explain the evolution of mankind. It was in 2020 when I found out just how important and vast the amount of data we have in this world — I was mesmerised by the fact that humans were able to predict things just by accessing information from the past,” says Yadav.

After carefully considering everything including the affordable course fees, great location, and the lifestyle I will be immersed in, I did not hesitate to apply to UniSC.”

He chose UniSC because the university focuses on research-based study. In Yadav’s first semester, he was already tackling topics like network security and cyber security. His favourite class, “Foundations of Computer Security”, taught him that every computer can be exposed to cyber threats. Another course, “Computer Science Project and Ethics,” provided him with experiential learning. Yadav completed the subject knowing what to expect when it comes to ethics, project management, system design, and even UML.

Federico Rusconi joined UniSC’s Bachelor of Information and Communications Technology programme to realise his goal to become a software developer. That desire never wavered — Rusconi began working as a freelance software developer during his last semester at the institution and is now a full-time software developer just months after graduation.

Rusconi credits this success to the internship opportunities made possible by UniSC’s supportive staff. The course coordinator for the internship helped the Italian graduate get his foot in the door with a company called SMEC — one of the biggest engineering companies in Australia — and ensured that the entire application process was nothing but smooth for him.

Thanks to his course coordinator, Rusconi got an insight into the world of work. He not only expanded on his existing technical knowledge by working with new and unfamiliar technologies, but he also picked up invaluable lessons on professional communication and problem-solving along the way.

Rusconi got to work on a few real-life projects that ultimately allowed him to land his current job as well.

Boundless opportunities, great support

“Just by being in the office, I was exposed to the office life and was able to see and study how the other employees approached their daily challenges.”

“Another staff member who supported me immensely is Afnan, whom I had as a tutor for multiple subjects. He was always available to answer my numerous questions and gave me the chance to bang my head against broken code, which allowed me to expand my problem-solving skills and learn how to work autonomously.”

Outstanding faculty members

UniSC has a successful track record of producing future-ready graduates. This is because they have outstanding faculty members who were and are industry leaders. Dr. Rania Shibl, for instance, has had a diverse career teaching and researching everything tech. She was a tutor at Massey University before becoming an Associate Lecturer in Information Systems at UniSC, then dabbled in a research project as well as a Forensic Accounting lecturer role before she found her way back to UniSC.

In 2021, Shibl took on the challenging role of Deputy Dean of School, Learning and Teaching at the School of Science, Technology and Engineering at UniSC. The role taught her that even lecturers and industry leaders must be open to steep learning curves and constant change. “I knew a lot about my own discipline and the programmes we offered, but in addition to Technology, I had to also get familiar with our Science and Engineering programmes and courses. My goal is to ensure our school is the best that it can be for those that come here to work or study.”

Asked what Shibl believed made the ICT courses at UniSC stand out, she says:

“Our staff have great industry connections, which provide opportunities for Work Integrated Learning, placements, and ultimately, jobs. We are also the only university in Queensland that has embedded industry certification as part of our courses. Students have the opportunity to earn an industry certification every year of their programme.”

Listen to the experts and jump straight into the IT job market now by graduating with a bachelor’s or a master’s degree — Master of Cyber Security and Forensics and Master of Information and Communications Technology — from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“The teaching staff are passionate and have great experience and knowledge in what they teach.”
