Puget Sound students love their liberal arts education

At the heart of the Puget Sound experience is its forward-thinking core curriculum. Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, it encourages students to think critically, explore widely, and connect ideas across disciplines. From day one, students are not just focused on a major, but on cultivating a broader understanding of the world -- whether that’s through science, the arts, or global studies.

The curriculum then lets you test these different ways of thinking through a diverse range of opportunities to learn outside the classroom. From internships to field trips, you’ll see concepts and courses come to life as you hone crucial soft skills, such as effective communication and problem solving.

Exciting experiential learning opportunities

Whichever programme students choose, they are set to make connections between disciplines, discover new knowledge, and apply it in the real world. After all, at Puget Sound, education is about doing, exploring, and applying – all with the constant guidance of faculty members, many of whom serve as mentors.

From studying abroad and community service to internships and research, every experience builds toward future success. All undergraduates complete at least one approved experiential learning activity and enrol in an Experiential Learning course like community-based learning, study abroad, or summer research.

One standout opportunity is the summer research programme, where students collaborate with faculty mentors to design and execute high-level, independent projects. Over 10 weeks of full-time research, students deepen their knowledge, refine professional skills, and contribute to the liberal arts and sciences. The programme includes a stipend for living expenses, with options for additional funding for research or travel. In the fall, students proudly present their findings, showcasing their growth.

My long-term goal is to become a subject matter expert in supply chain, which is the backbone of the industry. I found BGSU's Logistics Systems Engineering program is a combination of engineering and management, which helps me to enhance my knowledge and skills. I joined BGSU in January 2022 and got the opportunity to work as a Graduate Assistant on an industrial project under the guidance of Dr. Sarder.

“I started at Puget Sound with a passion for business but quickly realised it wasn’t my true calling. While I enjoyed the courses, they didn’t ignite the same passion I felt for politics and philosophy. I switched majors and haven’t looked back. The university’s career office has been incredibly helpful as I apply for summer 2025 internships, providing a detailed checklist to stay organised. I also love how our study abroad programme makes it easy to use scholarships for international experiences.

Regarding leadership, I'm a president of a couple of organisations. I've found that my classes best intersect with leadership in these roles. For example, I've had a couple of classes that required some pretty heavy public speaking. Some of our politics classes and freshman seminars are great for this. Essentially, you study the subject for the first half of the semester, and then in the second half, you act it out or role-play the history.”

“My most memorable class would be a psychology class I took with one of my favourite professors here: Developmental Psychology. We talked about how development progresses from the early years to adolescence. It was really interesting. That class was a big turning point for me in choosing psychology because it was fascinating to understand the reasons behind behaviour.

One thing I’ve learned is critical thinking skills. This is especially true at this institution, where many classes are student-centred rather than the traditional teacher-centred approach. Critical thinking is something I use now. I never really thought about it in high school in Taiwan. I wouldn’t say it’s just because the education system is different, but I think it's because I’ve learned that not everything is as clear-cut as it seems. If I could describe my experience at Puget Sound, I'd say exciting, enriching, and challenging.”

Psychology major, Taiwan
