Swechchha Bhattarai’s local architectural background opened her eyes to the importance of urban planning — an area she knew she could excel in with an international education. “Few universities abroad provided this module, but thankfully, the University of Plymouth did,” she says. “The MSc Planning’s modules attracted me first and the university’s rankings sealed the deal.”
Upon arriving in the UK, she immediately felt at home. Nostalgic cuisines were easy to find and the campus was filled with initiatives specifically for international students. Bhattarai even suggested a special event for students to share their cultures and traditions — an idea faculty members warmly welcomed.
At ease, she fully immersed herself in the programme she chose. “My favourite lessons were on coastal urban regeneration and urban design,” Bhattarai explains. “I am currently focusing on the sustainability of building/construction materials in coastal towns — specifically, meeting net-zero energy needs and also maintaining the architectural values of English coastal towns.”
Along the way, she mastered the arts of writing essays, producing reports, and speaking the English language – none of which would have been possible without her supportive professors. Their warmth has inspired her to gain professional experience in the UK after she graduates. Then, Bhattarai hopes to return to Nepal and truly make a difference to the surroundings she knows and loves.
