This postgraduate programme — the only one of its kind in the Southern region of the UK — enables students to relish the scientific discipline concerned with the sources, distribution and interactions of chemical elements in rocks, soils, waters, air and biological material. At the same time, it arms them with the geochemical expertise needed to succeed in the environmental consultancy market.
In preparation, students take on case studies and field excursions to current and legacy extractive industry sites close to Plymouth, including metal mining, china clay extraction, urban redevelopment and industrial processing sites. The rest of the programme is equally hands-on, encouraging learners to comprehend how chemicals of environmental concern move through the environment, how they should be analysed, and which methods work best for interpreting the data in support of environmental management decisions.
