Ka Ching Hung enjoyed the outdoors as a child, however, she was just a teen when she began to realise humankind’s role in its deterioration. Compelled to protect the environment, she knew going to Plymouth made perfect sense. “I have been living in a concrete jungle for most of my lifetime. Seeing a lot of greenery in Plymouth is very refreshing,” she says.
Once Hung completed a BSc in Environmental Science, she took on the MSc Environmental Consultancy. For her dissertation, she produced a review of amenity grasslands and wildflower meadows on the diversity of bumblebees and butterflies in Central Park, Plymouth. “I found it fascinating to examine the challenges associated with the particular environment or biotic interactions that are affected by human activities,” she explains.
When it was time to apply knowledge, she did so at Green Minds Plymouth, where Hung served as an ecological surveyor for five months. The role entailed completing primary data collection and analytical fieldwork. Events within the placement enabled her to collaborate with various organisations, such as RSPB and the Butterfly Conservation.
Upon graduating, Hung hopes to remain in the UK for as long as the country will have her. “I believe there are numerous environmental jobs available in Plymouth, given the fact that the city is located between the coastline and Dartmoor National Park,” she says. “Also, I simply enjoy the UK lifestyle.”
