Social science is the force driving the world forward. Behind every scientific invention, every groundbreaking innovation, and every transformative breakthrough, social scientists ensure ideas connect with real people and communities.

For more than a century, the social sciences at the University of Guelph have played a vital role in this work, serving as a cornerstone of progress and purpose. Its mission remains clear: to cultivate visionary changemakers equipped to address the most pressing challenges facing families, communities, and societies around the world.

It’s this long history of progress and expertise that has formed one of Canada’s most immersive and comprehensive experiential learning environments. Through hands-on opportunities in fieldwork, research, laboratories, and classrooms, as well as co-op placements, field schools, internships, and volunteer experiences, students gain both the intellectual and practical skills needed to launch their professional journey with confidence and purpose.

What Our Students Have to Say

“From my first visit to U of G, the energy felt right. The smiles, eye contact, and warmth of the campus community drew me in, and I'm so happy with my choice. I started in the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences programme, but during second year I realised my passion for neuroscience and psychology and the interdisciplinary connection between them and decided to complete a double major.”

Maaike Brijker

“I chose U of G for the beautiful and welcoming campus, but I was most impressed with the support I received as a student. The supportive professors in the sociology major have inspired me to continue my education and enrol in a master's degree programme where I'm excited to continue my learning journey at the University of Guelph.”

Grace Pinkerton

“I moved to Canada a little over a decade ago, having grown up in India and the Middle East. I am a first-generation Canadian who came here with my family, with no ties. It was the extracurriculars that I immersed myself in at the University of Guelph that allowed me to gain the skills needed in applying to governmental and research-based positions.”

Anindita Ponkshe

“I was driven by curiosity and a passion for environmental solutions; I chose this programme to delve into GIS and Geomatics. The breadth of electives empowered me to explore Geography, Environmental Sciences, and Computer Science, equipping me with a range of subjects. Above all, experiential learning opportunities have shaped my academic and professional journey, providing hands-on experiences that prepared me to tackle real-world challenges.”
