In a world where social systems face unprecedented challenges, one institution is leading the way towards a smarter, fairer and more humane future: The University of Birmingham’s School of Social Policy and Society. Here, you will join a vibrant, tight‑knit community that is driven by a powerful mission: understand the world deeply, then change it decisively.

No matter the programme, research and innovation come first. This focus shows up in many ways, whether it’s fighting for refugee rights or uniting researchers, practitioners, and people with lived experience to examine how social policy affects the financial well-being of marginalised groups.

As a student here, you’ll get exposure to such issues, delivered via strong teaching paired with engaging experiences. Field trips to Birmingham City Council and Parliament let you see policy in action and help you build the skills and confidence to become tomorrow’s policy leaders.

“The constant feedback we receive from our international students is the support and care they experience at UoB. We support international students with their language skills and academic skills and help them in their career aspirations.”

Dr. Prithvi Perepa, Global Engagement Lead at the School of Education

Learning defined by bold, independent thinking designed to stretch and challenge you

The learning culture here is rigorous, collaborative, and unapologetically inclusive. Step inside and you’re in a research‑intensive ecosystem built to stretch your thinking.

At its core are four research themes that double as a blueprint for understanding modern society: inequality and social justice, health and social care, crime and social harm, and culture, migration, and superdiversity.

The master’s programmes tap right into these research strengths. They push you to confront national and global challenges, using research to redesign the world with more equal and resilient communities.

The MPA at STEaPP helped me develop analytical skills in policy-making, project management and science and technology studies. This highly interdisciplinary programme allowed me to explore the nuances of digital technologies from different perspectives and disciplines. It ultimately prepared me to critically analyse the implications of various technologies in different Global South and Global North contexts.

The programme is also distinctly international, enabling me to develop networking skills among peers worldwide that further internationalise my career as a professional interested in public administration in its various forms. Ultimately, this programme strengthened my skills as a policy analyst and allowed me to expand the diversity of my research as a digital rights activist in Paraguay. It also paved the way for my career as a professional researcher, as I am currently enrolled in a PhD programme at UCL STEaPP.
