At the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), students build meaningful careers from the moment they step on campus. Located in the heart of Alaska’s largest city, UAA welcomes 12,000 students from across the US and nearly 90 countries seeking direct access to Arctic research, outdoor exploration, and hands-on experience with leading industries. This unique environment shapes UAA’s programmes and gives students a competitive edge in the job market.
This advantage is clear at UAA’s College of Engineering. Here, engineering, computer science, and project management students are immersed in the state's business and innovation centre. Anchorage is home to many of Alaska’s top employers, making it easy for students to connect classroom learning with career opportunities.
As a result, 74% of job-seeking students secure employment before graduation. That figure is only set to grow with the Alaska Department of Labour projects 627 new jobs in engineering and computer science by 2030. With two new hires needed for every one retirement, the need for talent is clear – and UAA’s College of Engineering graduates have the skills, experience, and confidence that meet this demand.
Discover the programmes
Bachelor of Science in Project Management
Designed to shape capable and confident leaders, this programme provides the knowledge and skills necessary to manage projects across various industries, including construction, engineering, healthcare, and technology. Theory blends with hands-on work to train students to become resourceful, collaborative and ready to lead. And by encouraging innovation and problem-solving that extends across Alaska and beyond, the BSc equips students with the tools to make a real-world impact wherever they go.

Master of Science in Project Management
Built for professionals seeking to elevate their expertise and step into leadership roles, this advanced programme builds on the foundational knowledge gained in a bachelor’s degree. It’s an MSc that responds to today’s workforce needs and develops leaders and executives who can strategically manage complex projects across industries. Outcomes are based on the professional best practices of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Global Accreditation Center (GAC) standards and guidelines, and UAA paradigms. Complete the programme and students emerge with technical expertise, strategy know-how, a facility for comprehensive and objective analysis, a suite of soft skills, and so much more. As one of the most valuable graduate programmes in Alaska, it continues to grow as a key driver in the state's project-based economy.

Bachelor of Science in Geomatics
This programme equips students with the skills needed for careers in surveying, mapping, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as related fields such as urban planning, environmental management, and civil engineering. Land surveying, geodesy, hydrography, photogrammetry, LiDAR, remote sensing, and GIS are combined into one comprehensive curriculum. Students learn how to work with modern tools to collect, analyse, and present spatial data as well. This is the only programme in Alaska that meets the educational requirements for professional land surveyor licensure. For those seeking a shorter, career-focused pathway, an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Surveying and GIS is also available, providing foundational skills for immediate workforce entry or transfer into the bachelor’s programme.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
This programme prepares students for a career in building and shaping the world around us. Civil engineering focuses on the design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure like roads, bridges, buildings, and harbours. To bring these concepts to life, this BSc leverages strong partnerships with local consulting firms, government agencies, and non-profits. Students get to work on real projects that directly impact and improve the communities in which they live and learn.

The Master of Science in Civil Engineering
This programme is designed to build strong technical and research skills. Students learn to use advanced analysis methods and deepen their understanding of civil engineering theory. The programme also focuses on developing research capabilities and applying theory to real-world design problems. Along the way, students gain experience working within the management structures common to engineering organisations as well, preparing them for leadership in the field.

Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering
This programme helps students build a strong foundation for a range of careers. From aerospace and automotive to renewable energy and manufacturing, the opportunities are vast and growing. The programme pairs theory with experience, giving students a head start into their future careers. Along with technical skills, students also benefit from networking opportunities that connect them with professionals and open doors to future career paths.

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
This programme is designed to equip students with advanced skills for real-world impact. The curriculum trains students in in-depth analytical methods and the application of complex engineering theory with confidence. High-level research and design of innovative systems empower students even more. Throughout the programme, students also develop the ability to work effectively within professional settings, setting them up to seize more senior roles.

Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, and Engineering
This programme brings together expertise from computer science, electrical engineering, and geomatics. Offered by the College of Engineering, the programme reflects the growing demand for data-savvy professionals. Students gain hands-on experience with artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and advanced data analytics, learning how to develop models, interpret large datasets, and implement intelligent solutions in real-world applications. With cross-disciplinary training and learning by doing, the programme equips graduates to apply advanced tools to complex, real-world problems. Students have opportunities to engage in individual research projects to explore cutting-edge developments in AI, machine learning, and data science as well.

Hear from the students
"UAA offers tremendous opportunities to students. A lot of opportunities are granted when students study hard and work hard."
Badam Baatarbileg
MS Project Management graduate

“Some of the expertise that exists at UAA doesn't exist anywhere else. It’s fascinating research that needs to happen as we look at a military operating in all sorts of different environments. Wanting to have that connection back to UAA is a continual touch point for me."
Lt. Col. Brigham Moore
MS Civil Engineering graduate

“UAA was a very natural choice, given the financial feasibility of it. But the quality of the faculty here and their mentorship, especially in the engineering programme, is also really top tier.”
Jacob Bodolosky
BS & MS Mechanical Engineering graduate

“Geomatics is an all-encompassing term that covers all the various activities you could do related to land surveying and mapping. It was outdoorsy and scientific, and that lined up with what I wanted to do. Then I took a class and basically never looked back."
Samantha Tanner
BS Geomatics graduate
