University College Cork's School of Law is ranked #59 globally and Ireland's #1 law school (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023). This is where world-class postgraduate programmes enable you to specialise in your areas of interest — and beyond. As a UCC School of Law student, you’ll develop transferable skills valued by employers, such as research, advocacy, communication, critical analysis, accuracy, and attention to detail.

But the School of Law isn't solely just about rankings and impact. It's about unparalleled learning experiences. Here, you learn from work experienced and expert supervisors, who have a full suite of services, facilities and activities to provide extra support and enrichment. You work with research masters, PhDs, and internationally renowned experts, who become your mentors and guides — within and beyond classrooms.

A real-world education

Learning at UCC School of Law transcends classrooms. UCC's Law Clinics bridge the gap between theory and practice, allowing you to collaborate with academics on real-world legal projects. You'll craft submissions to law reform processes, produce research briefs for civil society groups, help run a comprehensive online source of all aspects of Irish family law, provide legal information to startups on issues such as copyright, data protection and selling online and develop specialised skills of sports-related legal research, writing and strategy

These are works that can make a difference in many lives. The Child Law Clinic secured redress for survivors of sexual abuse in National Schools, which helped to secure rulings by the European Court of Human Rights in the Louise O’Keeffe case in 2014, and by the Government’s Independent Assessor in 2019.

8 diverse postgraduate programmes, 1 new LLM programme

Postgraduate programmes here stand out for how they leverage the school’s research strengths. Faculty actively contribute to public policy and debate, ensuring your education is informed by the latest legal and social developments.

Master’s programmes here cover business law, intellectual property and e-law, children's rights and family law, international human rights law, environmental and natural resources law, and marine and maritime law. There’s also a Law LLM and an LLB postgraduate degree.

From 2024, the school will offer a Law LLM (Alternative Dispute Resolution). Focusing on practice and policy, nationally and internationally, the theory-based and action-oriented programme explores the nature of conflict and conflict management; the spectrum of dispute resolution processes; and mediation in practice. Students can apply and expand what they learn in class exercises, intensive roleplay simulations and guest lectures.

For a shorter programme, consider the Postgraduate Diploma in Law (Alternative Dispute Resolution). It’s ideal for legal and other professionals who may prefer not to make an initial commitment to a full master’s programme. With this postgraduate diploma, graduates can progress to a research dissertation and earn a Masters in Law (LLM).

Hear from the students

One thing that is very appealing about studying law at UCC for someone from North America is that the schools don’t require your Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score. I ended up applying to UCC because it was a two-year programme instead of a four-year programme. I’m so happy that I chose UCC.

For anyone thinking of going into a postgraduate programme, I suggest you do the same, as everyone needs help along the way. In addition to the group of friends in the School of Law, I joined the UCC Hockey and UCC Lacrosse teams. UCC and Cork overall, have a great social and sports scene. Some of the best friends I made during my time in Cork were through these clubs and my fondest memories of Ireland are being a part of those teams.

“I believe that studying for my LLB will provide me with valuable knowledge and equip me with the skills to make a meaningful impact in the legal field. The course has been both challenging and rewarding, and I could not commend highly enough the support that UCC has offered me throughout my two years.”

This LLM not only provided me with a strong understanding of Human Rights Law at an International level but also in other areas of Law such as International Criminal Law and indeed Public Policy, to name a few.

While the programme was, to a great degree, academic, it also gave us an opportunity to step into the legal world. For example, my colleagues and I completed the Corn Adomnáin moot-debating competition by the Irish Red Cross and it was undoubtedly one of the many highlights of my year.”

“One of the major factors that influenced my decision to apply to UCC is its internationally renowned academic programmes. Coming from an IT background, I have experience protecting intellectual creations and innovations. I lived and worked in Ireland for a few years before applying to UCC, and I thoroughly enjoy the country's beautiful, friendly, and fantastic landscape.

While at UCC, one of my greatest achievements was participating in the UCC Montana University International Summer Law School. I gained valuable experience, learned new concepts, and had the opportunity to meet great intellectual minds.”

My long-term goal is to become a subject matter expert in supply chain, which is the backbone of the industry. I found BGSU's Logistics Systems Engineering program is a combination of engineering and management, which helps me to enhance my knowledge and skills. I joined BGSU in January 2022 and got the opportunity to work as a Graduate Assistant on an industrial project under the guidance of Dr. Sarder.
