Oyeshik Mukherjee always knew he wanted to explore the interface of chemistry and biology. He was drawn to the Department of Chemistry because many faculty members here focus on research that crosses into chemical biology, materials science, and bioengineering.
As a first-year student, Mukherjee has been focused on imaging-based projects. He’s found the campus core facilities, especially the light microscopy centre, to be incredibly helpful. "The staff there are very knowledgeable and always ready to help, which makes a big difference when you're just starting and trying to troubleshoot experiments," he says.
From day one, he found the environment welcoming and supportive. Faculty members are approachable and deeply invested in student success. Beyond the labs and lectures, the department encourages even more connection through ResearchFest, charity events, game nights, and frequent potluck gatherings.
But what impressed him most was how the programme blended technical skills with big-picture thinking and communication. "I feel like it’s setting me up well for whatever path I choose," he says.
