MS in Construction Management

Long B. Tran

Long B. Tran’s interest in construction and an urge to begin “something new” brought him to the College of Architecture and the Built Environment. The MS in Construction Management program felt like the right next step after his civil engineering undergraduate degree. The program was held in high regard in Pennsylvania and performed respectably in national rankings.

“My learning experience was awesome and my enthusiasm had been kept high during the whole two years of the MS in Construction Management program at Jefferson — all thanks to the well-balanced curriculum, practical case studies, and excellent professors,” Tran enthuses.

Each Jefferson professor played a role in his development, he explains. They were extremely knowledgeable in their respective disciplines on the academic and professional fronts. The top three technical skills he gained during his studies were construction estimating, scheduling, project management, building information modeling (BIM), and general industry knowledge. For the internship component of his program, he got to serve as project coordinator at Scungio Borst and Associates in Camden, New Jersey — this hands-on opportunity allowed him to apply the knowledge he gained from the comprehensive curriculum.

“The program was tough but well balanced, which really provided a solid foundation for someone to start in the industry. From estimating, to project management and LEED — these are all related to my current position,” he shares.

Upon graduation, Tran was offered a full-time position at Scungio Borst and Associates as a junior estimator. Today, he is still thriving at the firm and moved up to be a project estimator.
