Russell McIntire, PhD, MPH

Associate Professor

Dr. Russell McIntire’s research revolves around the social, behavioral, and built-environment factors that affect health, and designs place-based interventions to improve the health of populations. His particular interest focuses on the mental and physical health effects of parks and green spaces.

Many of his studies are conducted at Jefferson's Institute for Smart and Healthy Cities, where he serves as Associate Director. Here, he performs interdisciplinary research on the health effects of the built environment with faculty from the College of Architecture and the Built Environment and the College of Design, Engineering, and Commerce.

Students from the MPH program or other collaborating colleges are always around to take notes and lend a helping hand. “I love working with students both in and out of the classroom,” Dr. McIntire explains. “There are many opportunities to get involved with faculty projects at Jefferson.”

One of his more recent projects comprised Geographic Information Systems students linking residences of health survey responses to data on neighborhood environmental factors such as green space and tree canopy. The goal was to assess the impact of environmental factors on self-reported health and health disparities in Philadelphia.

“All members of the faculty work hard to give students real-world research experience, and I think those experiences are one of the reasons Jefferson students are well-prepared for public health occupations upon graduation,” he says.
