Amy Henderson Riley, DrPH, MCHES

Assistant Professor

Dr. Amy Henderson Riley’s expertise spans health communication, mass communication, mixed methods, program evaluation, maternal and child health, women’s health, and global health.

Her main focus, however, is entertainment-education research. She has led investigations into the role of media and storytelling on health-related knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and social norms in the US and in over 10 countries around the world.

Jefferson students play a crucial role in her work. When they aren’t serving as research assistants in her laboratory, they co-author her journal articles and book chapters. Learners are also welcome to participate in her projects for capstones and clerkships.

MD-MPH student, Elizabeth Critchlow, is a solid example. She worked with Dr. Riley to explore how entertainment-education programs around the world responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their work was published in the journal “Health Communication”.

“Working with students is one of my favorite parts of being a faculty member in the MPH program,” Dr. Riley says. “I enjoy having students work with me on real-world projects. It is delightful to watch students apply what they are learning in the classroom to public health research and practice and see their eyes open to new ideas and possibilities for their career they may not have considered before.”
