Synesthetic Research & Design Lab

Purple

The Synesthetic Research and Design Lab, at the College of Architecture and Built Environment serves as a collaborative research and prototyping platform where interactive design, digital culture, and emergent health sciences meet, highlighting the recursion between the individual and their environment.

The lab continuously aims to learn from unexpected collaborations, test unconventional ideas, and leverage novel pedagogical explorations to engage with young minds that come from diverse backgrounds and cultivate a collective learning process.

“From the human enacting on the predetermined possibilities the space affords, these fields of inquiry explore how the environment itself might adapt and interact with non-standard factors, inclusive to everyone.”

The installation has been transported around the world.

In 2021, Synesthesia was exhibited during the Venice Biennale not at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in Venice, Italy and the Piraeus Municipal Theatre in Athens, Greece. This year, it can be found in Rome, Italy at Trajan’s Market.

“Our projects -- including ‘Synesthesia’ and the under-development ‘Soft’ and ‘Apomonos’ -- integrate research and praxis around mental health and the potential for dynamic change and adaptation of space in real time.”

says Loukia Tsafoulia and Severino Alfonso, assistant professors in interior design and architecture.
