Malawi’s public infrastructure faces unique challenges every day, such as rapid urbanization, and the impacts of growing populations on health, education, and urban systems. The Malawi Health & Design Collaborative works in partnership with Malawian academic institutions, non-for-profit organizations and government to strengthen Malawi’s health and education infrastructure.

Experts and professional partners work together to strengthen health infrastructure with innovative programming, environmental performance analysis, and human-centered, evidence-based design. They continuously advance their multi-institutional center for groundbreaking research, design, and implementation. To encourage experiential learning, they provide real-world experiences to partner with Malawian students and professionals in architecture and the health professions.

Jefferson students get involved by exploring one of two research streams within the center: Impacting Healthcare, which entails working closely with some of Malawi’s finest universities and hospitals to contribute impactful solutions specific to Malawi healthcare providers; or Impacting Public Health, which designs solutions to public health crises found in informal settlements.

“The HDC anchors new frontiers of teaching and research, designing long-term models for Malawian health and human development, in collaboration with local universities, hospitals, international organizations, and government.”

says Chris Harnish, Associate Professor of Architecture (Technology, Social Design, Healthcare Design).
