Alex Sturges from Bath, UK, has always been interested in how the universe works. From his early interests in physics and maths to his decision to enrol at the University of Nottingham, his curiosity led him to an MSci in Physics with Theoretical Physics. He found Nottingham's vibrant academic community welcoming and inspiring, a place where both students and staff share a genuine passion for their work.

"My academic tutor, Professor Mike Smith, would check in on how I was doing and gave excellent advice when I was looking at options for after university," he says.

Sturges's dedication paid off when his MSci project, "Epidemic-like processes in open quantum systems" (with project partner Hugo Smith), won the prestigious Salmon Project Prize. He credits his success to Dr. Matteo Marcuzzi, his master's project supervisor. "He made sure we thoroughly understood the theory behind our project, regularly meeting with us to go through our work."

Throughout the project, he honed scientific research, teamwork, and communication skills, which he will apply as a Theoretical Physics PhD student at Delft University in Belgium. Looking ahead, Sturges aims to make meaningful contributions to the scientific community and continue pushing the boundaries of theoretical physics.
