The Chinese University of Hong Kong offers a high-impact
Master of Public Health

The demand for skilled and dedicated experts in the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health has never been more critical, especially as the global population expands along with new health and environmental challenges.

Enter The Chinese University of Hong Kong, home to the JC School of Public Health and Primary Care (JCSPHPC). It offers a Master of Public Health (MPH) that is fully accredited by the globally recognised Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation (APHEA). The accreditation body was launched by The Association for Schools of Public Health in the European Region (ASPHER), European Public Health Association (EUPHA), European Public Health Alliance (EPHA), European Health Management Association (EHMA) and EuroHealthNet.

The MPH is an outstanding choice for those eager to gain more knowledge or grow their careers in public health, as the programme integrates theory with practice, enabling graduates to tackle contemporary public health issues. Tailored concentrations – epidemiology and biostatistics, environmental/occupational health and infectious diseases, health promotion and social behaviour, population and global health, and health systems, policy and management – add more depth and prepare you for your specific career goals. Whichever concentration you choose, you’re set to develop professional in areas increasingly recognised as core to public health – setting yourself up for leadership roles within the industry.

“We are the only school in Hong Kong where public health practitioners and researchers work alongside family medicine doctors and primary care researchers to identify, examine and solve population health problems together. Our mission is to improve health and well-being for all through research, education and services.”

– Professor Samuel Yeung-shan Wong, School Director and Professor, JCSPHPC

A glimpse into the school

An education here will set you up for success. Students participate in cutting-edge biomedical research, develop grant writing skills, contribute to scientific literature, and refine presentation skills daily. You won’t be alone either, as there’ll be highly qualified faculty members and research mentors to help you along the way.

“All professors carry out their own research, write papers, and apply for grants, on top of participating in faculty initiatives, holding seminars and workshops, giving lectures and preparing modules,” says Associate Professor Roger Yat-nork Chung. “We coordinate the different courses and ensure students are well-positioned to enter society after graduation. It’s a very fulfilling experience.”

As the programme progresses, students transition to more advanced hands-on training. Aside from theoretical approaches, you’ll learn to contribute to policy development, engage with local communities in Hong Kong, and even work with corporate business sectors.

“Public health is flexible in the sense that it provides you with the solid foundation for you to explore further,” says Professor Chung. “We have students who would like to explore further in nursing or medicine, or other areas like social work or psychology. Some even want to work a little bit first to figure out what opportunities they have out there, and we’re trying to create an environment for them to do just that.”

For the final year, students can carry out a capstone project that’s based on research, a practicum, or laboratory work. As graduates, they emerge with an MPH with the same esteemed status offered by the likes of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and the University of Edinburgh.

“Our school has always been very supportive of our researchers in allowing them to have the freedom to choose what kind of research areas they would like to focus on, and I think that’s unique. Our students enjoy the same diversity and flexibility when it comes to the range of capstone projects offered here. You should think about what your passion or interests are and try to develop that – when there’s opportunity, you should try your best.”
