Jonny Alexander has played a pivotal role in developing SCIS’s design department over the years. As a new faculty member, he expressed his concerns and the school’s administration addressed them. They’ve even invested in his academic advancement by supporting him through his Master of Science - Multidisciplinary Studies in Education.

“Today, SCIS’s design department has grown from a seed to a wonderful space of computer-aided design and manufacture, and a lot of power tools and creative opportunities,” he says. “I have been here from the beginning, and I’ve invested and made a lot of decisions on the way the department has grown, its programmes, projects, as well as the assignments that children take on.”

Across each initiative, Alexander aims to help learners think critically and creatively by teaching them to “not just replicate projects and ideas, but to synthesise them with their own ideas and creativity.” Design lessons are now mandatory at SCIS to ensure every pupil develops this competency.

Outside the Design Technology classroom, Alexander oversees extra-curricular activities such as technical drama and stage set design. “I usually recruit a group of students who are enthusiastic in problem-solving and innovating different sets for a variety of shows,” he explains. “It’s very ‘real-life’ –– an amazing way for them to practise their skills in manufacturing, modelling and prototyping.”
