It’s a familiar scene for many parents: a child at a desk, concentrating hard, trying to keep up with materials and concepts that only seem to increase each day. In such systems, though, that constant momentum can leave little room for students to fully understand or grow confident in what they learn.

At Shanghai Community International School, academic rigour looks different. In classrooms, it isn’t about making learning harder, but about making it deeper. You can see it in the moment a student connects ideas, asks critical questions, and uses what they learn to create and apply. In other words, pressure isn’t the dominating feeling. Instead, it’s curiosity at work.

And when students learn this way, something special happens. They grow more independent, more resilient, more confident. They gain just knowledge and real-world skills. That is why SCIS alumni leave ready, for university and life.

“We are happy to be at SCIS. We trust that SCIS is the right environment. You have the freedom to explore yourself, develop your personality and get to be a part of a community. The key thing is that both our kids like coming to school. They come and go with a smile!”

My long-term goal is to become a subject matter expert in supply chain, which is the backbone of the industry. I found BGSU's Logistics Systems Engineering program is a combination of engineering and management, which helps me to enhance my knowledge and skills. I joined BGSU in January 2022 and got the opportunity to work as a Graduate Assistant on an industrial project under the guidance of Dr. Sarder.

Developing the whole child — beyond just learning academic content — is what SCIS is all about. It’s an approach that goes hand in hand with the International Baccalaureate (IB), which combines academics with learning experiences to empower students to grow into confident, self-directed learners.

SCIS is one of the first international schools in Shanghai to become an International Baccalaureate (IB) Continuum World School. It is fully authorised to offer the IB's Primary Years Programme (PYP), Middle Years Programme (MYP), and Diploma Programme (DP). This means students can fully benefit from a single connected learning journey from their earliest school days through to university preparation.

Nurturing potential at every stage

SCIS's IBDP framework helps students bring out the best in themselves. Because learning is centred around the student, there’s plenty of guidance along the way. It’s a safe environment where they gain the skills they need to thrive independently in the 21st century.
The IBDP nurtures students into globally minded individuals who appreciate different cultures. Through CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service), they explore new interests and serve others, growing into young people who truly want to make a difference.
CAS is only part of the story. Another cornerstone of the IBDP is the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. With plenty of discussion and independent exploration, students strengthen the kind of critical thinking that helps them succeed in higher education and whatever path they choose next.

A big part of TOK happens outside the classroom too. Whether it’s seminars, discussions, or real-world experiences, students are exposed to different perspectives. Over time, they learn how to analyse complex issues and express their ideas with confidence. Meanwhile, the Extended Essay challenges students to go beyond surface-level understanding. In this 4,000-word independent research paper, they explore a subject they're interested in, developing their ability to think critically, conduct in-depth inquiry, and present well-supported arguments with confidence.

SCIS's IBDP students consistently outperform global averages, including 45/45 scores and twice as many top ranked IBDP scores compared to worldwide results.

Growing through dialogue

There’s always more to explore

Some of the best learning at SCIS happens outside class. In the younger years, it’s all about nurturing independent learners. Activities like music, STEM, robotics, and languages give them new experiences, keep them active, and help them build friendships beyond the classroom. By middle and high school, arts and design are part of the curriculum too, keeping creativity just as important as academics.

Starting from Grade 6, students can get involved in over 16 competitive sports. More than just competition, they help students develop teamwork, leadership, and the confidence to succeed both on and off the field.

The arts is another core part of the curriculum, supported by talented teachers who bring passion and expertise to their classrooms. From theatre and music to visual arts and film, students learn every step of the creative process while being encouraged to express themselves in their own unique way.

“SCIS is a school full of opportunities. The teachers and staff are extremely encouraging – they build confidence that allows me to try film editing. How I really started was editing for assembly, and then the China trip videos. Without the community's support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

“With students representing more than 50 nationalities, global awareness isn't an add on at SCIS. Its embedded in daily learning. We connect rigorous academics with empathy, culture and service.

Preparation for life beyond school is where everything comes together. Rigor here means readiness-academic, emotional and social. We start early, guiding students to develop the habits that matter most: curiosity, organization, adaptability and collaboration.”

"SCIS really encourages students to learn by doing. The school’s open environment encouraged us to explore multiple interests without fear of judgment, whether joining the jazz band, trying out a sport, or diving into a creative project. And being able to try anything and everything gave me the confidence to take risks and pursue what I loved.” With the foundation he developed at SCIS, Leung earned an "admit" to the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Looking ahead, he's also preparing to direct his first feature film."

"At SCIS, I learned the value of embracing new experiences. Trying activities like volleyball and drama expanded my horizons and taught me to step out of my comfort zone. This mindset has guided my life decisions — from pursuing law school after years of work to relocating and travelling. SCIS instilled in me the courage to embrace challenges, a principle that continues to shape my journey today.” After graduating from university, Kane started working as a cybersecurity consultant. The rapid pace of technological innovation drew him in, which led him to law school and his role today as a privacy and cybersecurity lawyer."

"My time at SCIS taught me how to think independently and approach problems with curiosity.
