SLU graduate student Pavan Surag Bogisam undertook a summer internship with the Colusa County Department of Health and Human Services in California, working on projects including a tobacco education programme, where he prepared a qualitative analysis for community health assessment. He also contributed to a COVID-19 vaccination analysis and presented smoking’s ill effects to a wellness and recovery centre.

“These experiences collectively fortified my skills in data analysis, stakeholder engagement, and effective communication, all pivotal for my future career as an epidemiologist,” he says.

Which master’s programme works for you?

MPH in Behavioural Sciences and Health Equity

This programme explores why people behave the way they do in relation to their health and wellness. You will be trained to improve public health by developing, promoting, and researching community-wide initiatives to encourage healthy living practices to prevent disease and injury. This concentration is best for those who seek a career that involves applying epidemiological methods to the breadth of settings and situations in public health practice, analysing quantitative and qualitative data using biostatistics, informatics, computer-based programming and software, and interpreting results of data analysis for public health research, policy or practice.

MPH in Biostatistics

With an MPH in Biostatistics, you would know how to collect and analyse health information to forecast scenarios and make important health, economic or policy recommendations. A joint concentration in biostatistics and epidemiology prepares you to interpret epidemiologic data, communicate epidemiologic findings, use data to describe the health of populations, and critically analyse the epidemiologic literature. Both are great preparation for one of the most highly sought-after, best-paid roles in the United States today.

MS in Biostatistics and Health Analytics

Do you have strong quantitative abilities and a desire to apply mathematics, statistics, computer programming and data analysis to health-related issues? Then the Master of Science (MS) in Biostatistics and Health Analytics is designed just for you. Courses cover public health, the theory of biostatistics, methods of biostatistics, and computing. You end your programme with a capstone project, which includes fieldwork and research opportunities. Graduates often progress to roles as biostatisticians, data scientists, or data analysts.

MPH in Epidemiology

This MPH in Epidemiology achieves two key goals. First, it trains students to master foundational areas of epidemiologic methods and study designs. At the same time, it arms them with the analytical skills and hands-on know-how for further study or a wide range of careers, from hospitals and departments of health to the insurance industry and non-profit organisations.

MPH in Health Management and Policy

This MPH programme is a management core degree that features an additional emphasis on population health and health policy. It shares the same management core courses and internship process with MHA students. Whichever modules you choose, you’ll be ready for senior leadership roles in a wide range of public, private and not-for-profit organisations committed to improving health care delivery systems, access to healthcare services, and reducing risks to the public’s health.

Want to learn a new skill or master a subject area? MPH students at SLU can specialise by taking on a short certificate programme. Certificate programmes typically require 12 credit hours to complete, but by using electives in your MPH concentration, you can complete both your 42-credit-hour MPH and a certificate in just 48 credit hours — saving time and money, while giving you a boost to your career-readiness.

STEM-designated, career-focused

As an SLU MPH graduate, you’re set to hit the ground running after graduation. Over 95% of SLU MPH graduates are placed within three months of graduation. Some enroll in further studies, while others pursue careers within health systems, consulting, and managed care. Behavioral Science and Health Equity, Biostatistics, and Epidemiology are designated as STEM OPT-3 eligible programs for international students. Thus, international students are eligible for three years of OPT instead of the standard one year of eligibility.
