WKWSCI Programmes: Blending Academic Rigour With Practical Experience

Master of Media and Communication

Designed to help marketing communication specialists thrive in an evolving media industry, the Master of Media and Communication is an excellent choice for early to mid-career professionals looking to upskill or pivot to new roles.

The programme provides a strong foundation in theoretical and knowledge frameworks, strategic competencies in marketing communication, critical thinking capabilities and exceptional leadership skills. Students will have the opportunity to work with leading academics and industry experts and take on experiential learning opportunities, such as crisis simulations.

“We offer this course to our master’s students because it’s important for them to understand and manage press conferences and other types of real-time experiences when they are fronting an organisation and dealing with the media in real life,” emphasises Ms. Pei Wen Wong, Programme Director.

Master of Science in Information Studies

The Master of Science in Information Studies ensures students are well-equipped to manage and optimise information resources across various settings, gaining the leadership skills necessary to enhance efficiency and tackle diverse information management challenges.

Courses cover key areas of the information life cycle, such as the creation, appraisal, capture, organisation, retrieval, analysis, use, preservation, and management of information resources. Newer offerings include the examination of disinformation/misinformation. All offerings are geared towards careers in library and information-intensive industries and information analytics.

Each course is designed to integrate theoretical concepts with applied projects. Students learn to build digital libraries using open-source tools, cover metadata, run lab exercises on data extraction, and capture, visualise, and analyse user metrics.

Master of Science in Information Systems

The Master of Science in Information Systems programme blends theory and practice to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge necessary for the design, development, maintenance and management of information systems to provide better user experience. Paired with soft skills like leadership and management in the field of information systems transformation, the programme ensures students stand out as graduates. Practice-based experiential learning is a big part of the programme. Hence why the programme involves laboratory sessions and extensive project development.

Master of Science in Knowledge Management

If you want to work at the intersection of people and information resources, the Master of Science in Knowledge Management could be the perfect fit for you.

This one-of-a-kind programme is designed for those working in both public and private sectors, equipping them with the skills to optimise human and knowledge resources and contribute to an organisation's survivability and profitability. The programme emphasises creativity innovation, equipping professionals to lead and implement Knowledge Management initiatives in today's organisations.

You’ll work with members of the Knowledge Management Society of Singapore (KMS) as well, learning from their real-world success stories and industry experience to apply best practices. This experience will be useful when completing the programme’s Research Project, which can take the form of a dissertation or a critical inquiry.

PHD/Master of Communication Studies

The PHD/Master of Communication Studies research programme is ideal for those seeking to contribute new knowledge to this evolving field. Working closely with faculty members with diverse research interests, you’ll get to make your own mark with your own extensive and original research. The school’s research areas range from human-computer interaction, social media, and knowledge management in Information Studies, to health communication, marketing, journalism, and political communication in Communication Studies.

You’ll have the opportunity to present your findings at conferences, publish in top academic journals, and gain teaching experience to prepare for academic careers as well.

WKWSCI’s programmes stand out for everything else they provide beyond seminar rooms and lecture halls.

The school has state-of-the-art infrastructure and resources such as studios, labs, software, and even career coaching and workshops. Several types of scholarships are available to help students realise their full potential. The department helps fund coursework students, allowing them to attend courses and conferences overseas. Research students participate in doctoral symposiums and join summer programmes.

“We organise visits to companies and events, including prestigious international events like South by Southwest (SXSW) in the United States,” Associate Professor Sin says. “In addition, we partner with global institutions to create overseas immersion programmes and exchange opportunities.”

It’s clear that from day one, students are set for success after graduation.

An accomplished leader in the tech industry, Rao has spent the past seven and a half years in Meta Singapore working in roles spanning operations, engineering, and partnership.

Currently, she leads a global team of technical partner managers based in Singapore, driving innovation across borders. She previously co-led a women’s employee resource group on Facebook and is also involved with numerous initiatives aimed at supporting women in career growth or finance.

“I read this somewhere before – one day, when you become so big, don’t forget to bring the elevator back down for others. Advocating for women, having more women in tech and leadership roles – it’s the philosophy of helping others break through so that they can reach new levels.” – Sonia Rao

The Best Start To Your Career
