To take your legal career to new heights, come to Munich, Germany — a city not only known for its world-class museums, bountiful markets and classic Bavarian traditions but also for being Europe’s "Intellectual Property Capital". It is home to the European Patent Office, the German Patent and Trademark Office, the German Federal Patent Court, several intellectual property law firms, and various companies in industries heavily dependent upon intellectual property, such as Siemens and BMW. Hence, joining the Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (MIPLC) means securing a spot in the middle of the action.

An innovative collaboration between Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, University of Augsburg, Technical University of Munich and George Washington University Law School, MIPLC offers a unique educational experience that combines the best of global expertise with local insight. The result? Fruitful research projects, thought-provoking interdisciplinary initiatives and unlimited access to shared resources. One innovative academic programme unlocks it all, and more.

The full-time LLM

This one-year programme transforms individuals from diverse backgrounds into adept legal scholars and practitioners. It has a meticulously crafted curriculum that responds to the current demands for experts in the legal field, shaping incentives for innovation in today's market-driven economy. Its deep coverage of all relevant fields of law, with a particular emphasis on the interactions among those fields, sets the program apart from any other master’s program. Topics such as Competition in Digital Markets, AI, Digital Technology, and Data Law are covered alongside other engaging courses. They ensure students emerge with a comprehensive understanding of intellectual property and competition law and a deep appreciation for the educators who broadened their horizons.

Through optional internships with prestigious patent law firms, corporations, and IP institutions, students dive deep into the practical intricacies of the field. At MIPLC, they conduct guided research under the mentorship of esteemed faculty members — all of whom are renowned experts in their respective fields, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience from prestigious institutions around the world. Hence, their students gain key insights into EU and American jurisdiction and beyond. This level of breadth ensures graduates step into the workforce able to navigate the global landscape of intellectual property law with confidence and finesse.

“I have been using an inverted classroom concept for three years,” explains Karin Hoisl, who teaches the Introduction to Technology and Innovation Management course. “This teaching concept makes the content more interesting for the students and they learn more as they work through some of the theoretical content before the course begins. This allows them to better contribute to discussions and apply the content to real-life examples during the course.”

José Antonio Rodríguez Félix loves being immersed in MIPLC’s intellectual stimulating environment, exploring courses like Economic Foundations of IP and Introduction to Innovation and Competition Law. These courses challenge his perspectives and deepen his understanding of the intricate intersections between IP and competition law. “I believe that as future leaders of the IP world, we need a thorough understanding of these justifications,” he says.

MIPLC organises many events that maximise the employability of students. “As of now, I have already had the chance to attend several alumni gatherings which occur monthly, MIPLC-sponsored talks, an independently organised seminar hosted by the MIPLC, as well as various social events alongside the researchers of the MPI,” shares Rodríguez Félix.

Upon graduating, he aims to secure a position in the European market and make a meaningful impact in sectors like trademarks, AI, copyright, data protection, and patent licensing.

Pham Kieu Thuy's path to MIPLC began with a passion for medical research in Vietnam. After completing her PhD in molecular biology in Germany, she transitioned to patent law, seeking a broader understanding of intellectual property rights. Drawn by MIPLC's reputation, she enrolled in the LLM programme, enticed by its international and interdisciplinary curriculum.

Courses like the Economic Foundations of IP nurtures vital analytical skills while the Introduction to Innovation and Competition Law course provides a nuanced perspective on the interplay between innovation, competition, and intellectual property rights. “Through case studies, discussions, and practical exercises, we gain a deeper understanding of the interplay between innovation and competition in real-world contexts,” Pham says.

She credits MIPLC’s experiential learning opportunities and support system for her career-readiness. As she sets her sights on becoming a patent attorney specialising in biotechnology, she reflects on MIPLC's impact, grateful for the tools and purpose it has instilled in her.
