Growing up in a place with a population barely larger than a couple of university halls, Amanda Palumbo didn’t initially envision a career in chemistry. Early on, her only exposure to science careers was her paediatrician, so she began her college journey on a pre-med track at Kalamazoo College.

However, it was at K-College that Palumbo discovered her passion for research. A National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates award took her to MSU, where she worked on cancer-fighting organic molecules.

This experience showed her the broad impact research can have, inspiring her to pursue graduate school at MSU. Here, she worked with two advisors from different departments, gaining invaluable experience in both analytical and organic chemistry.

Today, Palumbo is thriving at Dow as a senior government affairs director. Her career has spanned research, management, and talent strategy, but one thing remains constant.

"I think what has been consistent is something I learned at MSU: work with purpose, do what you enjoy, and collaboration is key," she says.
