Lee Xinyao (Yonnie)

Lee Xinyao (Yonnie)

Lee Xinyao, affectionately known as Yonie, spent nearly eight years dedicated to rhythmic gymnastics. However, by the time she was 16, she had decided that she wouldn't pursue the sport into adulthood. "I always had a vision of studying in university and making friends," she recalls. Her interest in medicine, specifically anaesthesia, was sparked at 13 after a gymnastics injury that required stitches near her eye.

Lee’s curiosity, participation in the Philippines 2019 Southeast Asian Games, and strong academic performance — driven by her mother's encouragement — set the stage for her future at MSU. Recognising her talent, the university awarded her a scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery that included tuition and accommodation.

So far, Lee’s loving the variety of classes, from interactive lectures to practical sessions. She finds them enriching. One of her favourites is the clinical skills lab, where she learned procedures like venipuncture on models. "The practical classes are incredibly helpful," she says. "We learn everything from the basics to more complex techniques."

Lee appreciates the dedication of her lecturers, who are willing to explain concepts even outside office hours. Their support and all her hard work paid off when she received a distinction in the MBBS professional examination.

“The revision classes before the exams were super helpful, ” she says. “They highlighted the most important knowledge and took the time to ensure we understood everything in detail. ”

Looking ahead, Lee is considering specialising in anaesthesiology, orthopaedics and dentistry. But first, she plans to complete her five-year programme, take a year off to participate in one of MSU’s many exchange programmes, and then return to graduate before continuing her residency.
