Build your future in the arts

To make it in the arts, talent can only take you so far. Honing that talent with the right training is what truly drives success. Leeds Conservatoire, a leading multidisciplinary conservatoire for music and performing arts, offers the environment and support that nurtures you into the career-ready performer, musician, producer and creative you’re meant to be.

For Bernadette Koh, a BA (Hons) Acting student, that encouraging but challenging environment was the deciding factor.  She was drawn to the appeal of “guaranteed training that would push me beyond my limits and force me out of my comfort zone.” “Having grown up in a small country that had very few theatrical training opportunities, I was hence captivated by a school that offered such intense practice,” she says.

One thing she loved most about the conservatoire? The chance to explore. Mentors imparted their knowledge and always pushed her to pursue unique projects that challenged her creativity.

“For example, we were encouraged to start a project that we’ve always wanted to do, and I got the exclusive opportunity to star in a zombie short film,” Koh says. “This process taught me so much about how I approach creative tasks, and it pushed me to develop skills that I never thought possible (i.e. recreating Zombie-like makeup, storyboarding an action sequence etc.).”

Even though Koh experienced "such wonderful moments in school," life as an international student isn’t always easy. At first, she often felt alone and was unsure of where to find comfort. But Leeds Conservatoire is built for students like her in mind. It offers various student support services, including well-being for performers and international students, mental and emotional health support, and more.

“Once I remembered that this feeling of solitude is something everyone else shared, the world seemed a little less scary, and I came to the realisation that there is actually a huge support base around me that I could rely on,” she says.
