The improvement of urban infrastructure and access to clean water are among the 14 engineering grand challenges identified by the National Academy of Engineering. At Kansas State University's Department of Civil Engineering, you will directly address these challenges through extensive research with the help of an award-winning faculty and multiple laboratories, including the Civil Infrastructures Systems Laboratory.

Here, research projects focus on geotechnical engineering, pavement and materials engineering, traffic and transportation engineering, structural engineering, surface/groundwater hydrology, hydraulic engineering, and environmental engineering.

Breakthroughs to emerge from this department’s research and beyond inform its Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in civil engineering. Whichever level you’re on, you are encouraged to apply theory to practice as you conduct research, experiment with ideas that will shape a better world, and advance your career.

Graduate outcomes and career development

At Stantec, Kahao Lim works in the process engineering group on drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and industrial treatment projects. Poornima Patil is an assistant professor at Jamestown University where she develops and teaches courses in civil engineering, and collaborates with colleagues and industry partners in groundbreaking research to advance her respective field. Fahed Salahat is a structural designer at STAND Structural Engineering Inc, exercising his expertise in the modelling and analysis of structures.

Their successes are a common sight at Kansas State University’s Carl R. Ice College of Engineering, where there is a good track record for career placement, and a US$97,695 average starting salary.

The Career Centres are keen on keeping these figures. They are guiding students to be workforce ready, and linking them with employers when hosting career fairs. The Graduate Student Council (GSC) runs professional development seminars to develop fundamental skills in networking, grant writing, presentation, and more. Aspiring leaders can join the semester-long Graduate Student Leadership Development Programme, or gain science communication skills through the Kansas Science Communication Initiative (KSCI).
