For over a century, Kansas State University, Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological & Agricultural Engineering (BAE) has championed the land-grant mission. By fusing agriculture and engineering, it tackles real-world challenges in food, energy, and water sustainability.

They do this by creating and disseminating knowledge and innovation in agriculture and biological systems. The aim is to advance the application of engineering and technology to living systems — from plants and animals to the environment itself. To that end, students are trained to apply scientific principles such as physical, biological and technical sciences to address global opportunities in these areas. What's more, BAE fosters practical experience, allowing students to collaborate with faculty on research projects or gain valuable summer internships, adding valuable hands-on experience to their skillset.

K-State stands out as Kansas's only institution offering undergraduate degrees in Biological Systems Engineering, Environmental Engineering, and Agricultural Technology Management. Each program fuels the department's core mission: bringing solutions to life. From ensuring a safe and sustainable food supply to using technology for environmental protection, BAE graduates make a significant impact. They go on to enjoy great career prospects with strong starting salaries and placement rates. Many pursue further education in law, business, medicine, veterinary school, or graduate programs.
