Andrew Kratz

Andrew Kratz arrived at Hargrave as an awkward teenager. He had never lived away from his parents, but with the experiences open to him, his spiritual, residential and cadet life quickly made him stronger.

“The experiences — the leadership from cadets, staff and faculty, as well as the genuine relationships that were developed in that time — gave me a level of confidence and independence that I think most high school graduates who lived at home don’t have,” the Class of 1989 graduate shares. “Hargrave did a great job of providing that confidence, independence and the character to be resilient, persevere and figure it out through life.

His advice to all new recruits is to soak it all in. “They're laying this foundation down — character, integrity, professionalism, discipline — for a successful life,” the business owner and father of five enthuses. “Discipline, organisation and character aren’t bad words — those are good things. Absorbing that as part of your identity is one of the most important things that they can do to prepare them for life.”

As for the friendships, bonds and brotherhood they share? “They’re lasting.”
