To prepare for careers in computer and information science, choose Drexel University’s College of Computing & Informatics (CCI). The curriculum is cutting-edge, the research is ground-breaking and the links with industry are deep.

Of all the features of this national leader in information and technology education, it is its faculty that stands out the most; CCI is home to a world-class faculty of leading computing and information science experts.

Each professor is excellent in transforming students into career-ready professionals in their own way. Assistant Teaching Professor Tim Gorichanaz — who earned his PhD in Information Studies at Drexel University — teaches human-computer interaction and user experience (UX), which he says, “is going to be a defining field for the foreseeable future.” “In the past, different technology products could be differentiated on hardware, but nowadays software is the big differentiator, and that means user experience design is central. Besides HCI/UX, our program in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is very topical — especially over the past six months, AI is on everyone’s mind!”

Such dynamic topics come to life through experiential learning. The course taught by Assistant Teaching Professor Lei Wang (who holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel University) introduces both fundamental and practical aspects of recommender systems with a focus on data science approaches, covering basic types of recommender systems to more advanced types.

Students gain hands-on, collaborative experience through CCI’s coursework, including assignments, quizzes, and group projects informed by tech industry trends. The College also hosts an annual hackathon for students and professionals, Philly Codefest. “This free software and hardware hackathon encourages students and professionals from all experience levels and backgrounds to collaborate and develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges,” she says.

Gorichanaz describes Drexel as a professionally-focused school where professors work hard to prepare graduates for demanding roles in industry. “Our classes often involve active learning, meaning students learn through practice and experimentation rather than just listening to lectures,” he says.

Experiential, industry-informed Computing & Informatics master’s degrees

“Many programs also have a capstone experience. In the HCI/UX program, for instance, students will complete their master’s with a two-quarter-long design project mentored by a professor or industry contact, doing professional-level design work.”

A smooth transition from CCI to career

CCI is exemplary in how it develops top tech talents. Its Corporate Partners Program connects companies with CCI students through “Tech Talks and Skills” workshops, day-long company workshops and showcases, Senior Design Projects, and more.

Networking opportunities are plenty — especially during its biannual career fairs. Each fall and spring quarters, the College hosts an exclusive career networking event for CCI students to meet and interview with Corporate Partners and Philadelphia area tech companies and startups.

Take the Master of Science in Data Science, for example. The traditional curriculum consists of four required courses and 11 electives from three tracks — Analytics, Mining and Algorithms; Visualization and Communication; and Management and Accountability.

On the other hand, the modular certificate curriculum allows students to select three different data science certificates to gain a foundation in data science and focus on specific skills and knowledge. This option enables students to earn at least two marketable credentials as they earn their master’s degree.

MS in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning

The Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning builds a solid foundation in mathematics, algorithms, tools, and applications concerning artificial intelligence and machine learning. It’s a dynamic program, thanks to CCI’s world-class faculty bringing their research experience into the classroom.

Coursework covers a wide range of topics, including data science, mathematics and algorithms for AI and machine learning, domain-specific applications, and many more. The program culminates in a collaborative, hands-on capstone project.

MS in Computer Science

The Master of Science in Computer Science covers core topics in areas of computer science. Apart from theoretical knowledge, students can perform cutting-edge research and training to become computer scientists or software engineers in business, industry, or government.

For those interested in pursuing doctoral studies or other research-oriented career paths, a thesis option is available.

MS in Software Engineering

The Master of Science in Software Engineering is ideal for those interested in technical and managerial software work across various application domains. Here, students develop a deep understanding of various software systems, languages, and methods used in the field.

Upon completion, graduates are more than ready to adapt to the rapid changes in the software engineering field — skills that would allow them to climb the corporate ladder or become successful entrepreneurs.

MS in Computer Security and Privacy

The Master of Science in Computer Security and Privacy trains students in the science, technology, and policy that are essential to protecting information technology and data. This program establishes the computer science and software engineering system fundamentals needed by the modern cybersecurity expert.

Specifically, CCI has courses on security engineering, software engineering, operating systems, and computer networks. It also emphasizes machine and deep learning, which have become the foundation for many security applications.

MS in Data Science

A Master of Science in Data Science at CCI will provide students with the skills, perspectives and expertise to succeed in today’s rapidly changing information and technology-driven economy.

Graduates from this program can collect, manage and analyze fast-growing datasets that will lead to unique discoveries, insights, and value for various industries, including healthcare, finance, and business operations.
