From Delhi to Dalhousie: A tale of international connections
INDIA
My name is Shivam Chauhan and I’m an industrial engineering student from India. I’d grown up with a passion for physics and math — always finding my classes back in school fascinating. Naturally, I knew that I wanted to pursue a university programme that gave me the chance to explore this more. As a high-achieving Indian student, I also knew I wanted to do so at one of the best universities in the world.
Thus began my journey to search for the perfect engineering degree. I knew that I needed to get out of my comfort zone — so I chose to apply to universities far from home. My hope? To gain an academic experience that would expand my mind, connect me with like-minded future leaders, and expose me to cultures and people different from home.
I found all of this and more at Dalhousie University. Located on the East Coast of Canada, Dalhousie is a top institution that offers dynamic programmes across 13 different academic schools. It has four campuses in two main locations: Halifax, a diverse oceanside city full of opportunity, and Truro, a quaint countryside town for a peaceful retreat.
I found Dalhousie to be my most affordable option whilst meeting a great many of my criteria: being one of the best in its region, having a great engineering programme, lots of opportunities, and one of the warmest winters in Canada. As an Indian used to warmer weather, the latter point was important — and Dalhousie delivered. All the buildings are connected so you never have to get out in the cold between classes!
Despite being so far away from home, I felt immediately welcome and comfortable here. It wasn’t long before I felt like I belong on this campus with over 20,000 students from more than 120 countries. We have the Dalhousie International Students Association, Dalhousie Indian Students Association, Dalhousie Hindu Students Association, Dalhousie Gujarati Students Association, and hundreds of other student societies where you can get involved.
I’ve received a lot of support and grown so much since joining Dalhousie — far beyond what I’d imagined.

These societies organise events for students and provide support in many ways. For example, we celebrate Diwali, Navaratri, Holi, and Uttarayan in Halifax just like we did in India. Although I miss home sometimes, I truly feel like I’ve found a community here — one that not only helps me in my studies but cares about my interests, customs and traditions.
I’m based in Sexton Campus in Halifax — which is, in my opinion, the best place to be. Located closest to downtown among all three Dalhousie campuses, its buildings face some of the prime retail streets in the province’s capital.
The campus itself is beautiful and modern. We have so many labs, a cafeteria, a gym, and the Maker Space — my personal favourite. This is where you can use several machines (3D printers, laser cutters, woodcutters, sewing machines, and more) to make whatever you want.
Pursuing an engineering diploma at Dalhousie comes with many more perks. For example, my classes are small, my teachers (who are leaders in their fields) care and I get to apply what I learn in co-ops.
Looking back, I am immensely grateful to myself for taking this decision to move to Halifax and would recommend this experience to anyone and everyone!
