Graduates are set for successful, impactful careers

Rigorous, systematic, and passionate. These are the words Cindy Kang uses to describe the Master’s in Economics program at Columbia University. For her, it was a life-changing experience that exceeded every expectation. More than anything, it taught her how to use economics to untangle complex issues that had long fascinated her.

Growing up in Beijing, Kang witnessed firsthand the deeply rooted gender disparities that shape China’s labour market. From unequal pay to limited opportunities for women in leadership roles, these systemic challenges sparked a personal and academic commitment that guided Kang’s journey to New York City.

“Columbia University’s Master of Arts in Economics (MAE) seemed like the perfect fit for me to achieve my goals,” she says. “I vividly remember my excitement and anticipation upon receiving the admission letter from Columbia.”

Many are drawn to Columbia’s Department of Economics for its reputation. Its roots trace back to 1821, when Reverend John McVickar, Professor of Moral Philosophy, Rhetoric, and Belles Lettres, began offering instruction in political economy — marking Columbia as one of the earliest American institutions to embrace this discipline. Today, the Department of Economics ranks among the world’s top institutions, offering comprehensive programmes for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

The Master of Arts in Economics

This rigorous, quantitative programme was designed for students and professionals who aim to deepen their expertise in economic theory, applied research, and advanced econometric techniques. It equips them with the analytical skills and knowledge needed to excel in diverse fields, including academia, finance, government, and policy-making.

“We train students for careers as economists in a variety of types of institutions, not

only as teachers of economics but also as researchers and practitioners in the private sector

employers such as banks and consulting firms, public-sector institutions such as central

banks and non-governmental organisations concerned with public policy,” shares Michael Woodford, Economics Professor and Department Chair.

The core courses span the three key fields of economics: microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics. The various electives allow for specialisation in areas such as financial economics, international economics, industrial organisation, and policy analysis.

Crowd

“The summaries of key concepts, problem-solving exercises, and Q&A sessions meticulously prepared by the dedicated and knowledgeable TAs significantly enhanced my absorption of new knowledge,” says Kang.

“The programme even allowed me to conduct independent academic research in my area of interest during its third-semester capstone project. Working under the supervision of Professor Sandra Black, a scholar I admire, I was able to weave together my passions for labour economics, gender equality, and policy implications.”

Unwavering support every step of the way
