Associate Professor in Energy Transitions

Jessica Jewell

“The Energy Area of Advance supports collaborations between everyone from engineers to social scientists and historians. It’s really exciting to be involved with these initiatives and makes it easy to meet people from across the university.”

The result? A recently published paper on the phasing out of coal in Europe and the implications of this for developing and emerging economies. “For the Paris climate target, emerging economies like China and India need to phase out coal twice as fast as European countries,” says Jewell. “This poses a significant challenge and also raises concerns over fairness. Now we’re looking into how international policies can help address these concerns.”

Jessica Jewell works on the feasibility of climate solutions. “I really want to understand which climate solutions are more feasible and where,” she explains. “I want to learn from how societies have successfully addressed past challenges – like the oil crisis – through technological and social change to support policy-makers dealing with the challenge of climate change.”

She is really happy she chose to move to Chalmers. “Researchers have a lot of freedom to pursue interesting research directions. The university fosters a culture of scientific debate and curiosity.” she shares. She also routinely integrates students into her research: “Working with students on new research ideas is really fun because they bring a fresh mind to problems and are really creative in thinking about new areas.”

Working with colleagues from other disciplines is a cornerstone of her work. “The university has a number of ‘Areas of Advance’ with resources focused on supporting and promoting cross-disciplinary collaboration,” Jewell says.
