Timeless with a rich history of excellence – that is Brentwood School. Based in Essex, it’s one of the UK’s leading independent day and boarding schools for boys and girls aged three to 18. Here, the school’s values of “Virtue, Learning, Manners” are at the centre of everything they do; these values guide students to discover and develop their talents from a young age, acting as a compass for success both in and out of the classroom.

Learning at Brentwood goes above and beyond. The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB), providing Sixth Formers with intellectual rigour and a global learning perspective. Outside the classroom, students have the opportunity to engage in a variety of co-curricular activities and sports to develop their personal interests and broaden their horizons. Learning even extends beyond campus grounds – the school is strategically located only 25 minutes from London by train, and allows for access to a multicultural metropolis that houses world-class museums, art galleries, theatres, and sports facilities.

“We need to prepare our students for a fast-paced and ever-changing world. They will need to solve problems we don’t yet know about – in addition to those we do – and many will take on jobs that don’t yet exist. Our students are active participants in this journey and distinguish themselves as enterprising young people who always strive to be the best version of themselves.”

Record-breaking IB results

The class of 2024 is celebrating a record set of IB results. The maximum number of points a student can score is 45, and the 2023 worldwide average was 32; Brentwood students produced an average of 38.2 points. Out of the 30 IB students, 12 scored 40 points or more, with two securing a maximum of 45 points.

This is the result of pursuing the IB diploma at a top-tier school like Brentwood. It’s the joint leading day and boarding school in the UK – and third overall – in the 2023 UK Top IB Schools (Small Cohort) League Tables for its 36-point average. Excellence speaks for itself – all five students pursuing medical and veterinary degree courses are set to join their first-choice universities. Others are moving on to fields like law, filmmaking, performing arts, and more, with some heading overseas for the next stage of their education.

"While the IB Diploma is known to be a great choice for all-rounders, I am proud we have such exceptional success with students applying for the most demanding university courses, such as medicine, veterinary science, mathematics, engineering, and at the most selective universities. “It proves that our IB Diploma prepares students for elite academic success, and it provides the specialist understanding needed to excel at the highest level."

What’s more impressive is that most of the cohort graduate with co-curricular achievements alongside these academic outcomes. Some have made contributions to the school’s sports programmes and cadet forces, some are stars of the Performing Arts Department, and some have served the school as Deputy Heads, House Captains, and more. Seven students were also Bursary Award holders, including a student from Ukraine who fled the country due to the Russian invasion – three of them are ambassadors for the school’s foundation, which raises funds for those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

A new chapter for Brentwood School

Brentwood School, renowned for its rich tradition of boarding education, is embarking on an exciting new chapter. The school is set to redefine the boarding experience by constructing a state-of-the-art boarding house, scheduled to open in September 2025. This ambitious project aims to provide a modern, comfortable, and inspiring space to live and learn. Featuring single en-suite bedrooms, the house will provide students with privacy and the ideal setting for focused study. The central shared facilities, including a Sixth Form Café, will further create a strong sense of community and more opportunities for interaction between students.

"Ensuring that the boarding experience is a happy one in a comfortable, welcoming environment is important to us. Our team of house tutors and domestic staff will ensure that students are fully supported in their academic and social lives." shares Steve Taylor, Hough House's houseparent.

"Boarding has been an important part of Brentwood School for much of its 466-year history. It contributes strongly to the school's sense of community. For our international students, it offers a high-quality British educational experience and provides a home-for-home experience for all of those who come to board at Brentwood."

I picked Brentwood School because it has a lot of great facilities. We have a library and a sports centre which is great. We can play badminton, trampoline, and other very niche sports. The gym is well-equipped, and I especially like the fact that we have a swimming pool, which a lot of schools envy us for. As a boarder, we can use the facilities until 10 p.m., which is plenty of time after school every day.

On the weekends, sometimes we go to Central London, especially because we have a 40-minute link on the Elizabeth line. It also goes all the way to Heathrow, so it's convenient for me to go home as well.
