Benjamin Farrer

Class of 2014

Choosing the right graduate school can be life-changing, and for Benjamin Farrer, Binghamton was that graduate school for him.

Two factors made the difference. Binghamton’s emphasis on “science” in political science. The programme offered rigorous training in the scientific method, focusing on cutting-edge techniques but always taking an inclusive approach to methodology training. Despite lacking a quantitative background, he found support through sequential courses that built fluency in research methods, similar to a foreign language requirement. The university even provided funding for additional training, showcasing its commitment to making advanced methods accessible to all students.

The next factor was the department’s long experience with international students. Farrer felt supported in every step of his transition, making it easier to focus on academics and research.

"The Political Science department at Binghamton sparked a love of research that has given me tremendous fulfilment and set me up for a successful career doing what I love," he says. "I will always count myself incredibly lucky to have gone to school there."
