"My career aspiration is to join the academe and foster a love for learning and questioning the status quo among the next generation of students. In addition to providing the basis for my doctoral research (a necessary step along this journey), the degrees in international law and diplomacy broaden the fields, pedagogies, and methodologies I can draw on to teach.”
Bhavani Kannan
Since her undergraduate years, Bhavani Kannan was driven by a passion for public international law, particularly in areas like conflict, peace, and human rights. She then opted to join the ANU College of Law for its Master of International Law and Diplomacy, which provided a unique combination of diplomacy and international law.
“The skills and experiences I have gained from this program are genuinely too numerous to list,” says Kannan, who is also a tutor. “Doing the double degree gave me a definite edge over my peers and made me a stronger student.”
The all-encompassing legal education arms students like Kannan with the knowledge and skills needed to adjust to different legal environments. Alongside her classmates, she conducted fieldwork in Geneva, attended conferences in Hawaii, and studied real-world crises in workshop sessions. It’s the ideal launchpad for Kannan, who intends to join the academic world full-time.
